On the 5th of February 2016, 4D & 4E went to Shannon for the Aviation trip. The drive there took about two hours, but it really didn't feel that long.
Once we arrived we were split into two groups. My groups had a talk on flight theory first. Although I've been on many planes, I've never given much thought to what makes them fly, so it was really interesting to learn about it. Next, we went downstairs and were taught how to work life jackets and what to do if you did end up in water after a plane crash. Again, life jackets were something I had never given much thought to. I had always paid attention to the safety announcements on flights, but I didn't actually know how to work the life jackets. Seeing how they function in real life was, I think, extremely helpful and was very important information to learn. We then went to the museum, which unfortunately, my group didn't get to see all of. But the parts we did see were very interesting, like how the oxygen masks on the planes work. After our lunch, we had a talk on composition. I had no idea what composition was before this talk but I was surprisingly really interested in it. It was all about how planes are fixed. It was amazing to see how much detail goes into to fixing planes, even on the smallest of repairs. It was quite reassuring to know that this much detail and work goes into fixing planes. The last part of our day was spent at the flight simulators. We got into pairs and used the same equipment as that of training pilots to fly our own plane. It was a really fun experience and was a lot more difficult than it looked. We're extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity. Overall, the day was really informative, interesting and enjoyable. This was helped by the fact that all the staff and speakers were so passionate about aviation, which made what they were saying even more interesting. (Written by Alice O'Toole) Comments are closed.
